Grafik Dynamo (2005)
While having breakfast this morning in the fabulous new dining room at The Banff Centre I was chatting to an artist-in-residence here. After talking through the work I'mundertaking she recommended looking at the work of artist Kate Armstrong.
Armstrong has a rich history of creating new and novel digital pieces, including work which seems in the same vein to what I hope to create.
I also love this piece which she created alongside Michael Tippett. Dragging random images and text content from blogs they have created a dynamic and surreal comic strip which draws in real-world information and jumbles it into a context that can be uniquely interpreted by the viewer.
Take a look at a few or even set it as your homepage. You never know what you're going to see next.
Grafik Dynamo (2005) is a net art work by Kate Armstrong and Michael Tippett that loads live images from blogs and news sources on the web into a live action comic strip. The images are accompanied by narrative fragments that are dynamically loaded into speech and thought bubbles and randomly displayed. Animating the comic strip using dynamic web content opens up the genre in a new way. Together, the images and narrative serve to create a strange, dislocated notion of sense and expectation in the reader, as they are sometimes at odds with each other, sometimes perfectly in sync, and always moving and changing. A narrative sequence emerges but is never closed.
